How the Roster auction works
Captains build teams by bidding credits on players. Roster keeps the teams balanced by MMR: every team must finish between the MMR floor and the MMR budget, and a bid is only allowed if every team can still get there afterwards.
Two budgets, two jobs
- Credits: what captains bid with
- Each captain starts with
Credits = 100 + 0.018 × (captain MMR average − captain MMR), rounded to one decimal. A captain 1,000 MMR below the captain average starts with 118 credits; one 1,000 above it starts with 82. Lower-rated captains can afford the stronger players they need. No captain starts below base price × picks (4 credits), so everyone can fill their roster. - MMR budget: how much MMR a team may hold
- The most total MMR a team may hold, captain included. Roster sets it from the data you enter: target team MMR = average captain MMR + 4 × average player MMR. The MMR budget is the target plus a balance window; the MMR floor is the target minus the same window. Each captain's own MMR is deducted from the MMR budget before bidding starts, so lower-rated captains have more MMR room for picks.
- Balance window
- Chosen in Budgets: Tight (±2% of target), Balanced (±3%, the default), Relaxed (±5%), or a custom ± value. If the entered MMRs can't support a preset with room to bid, Roster widens it to 1.5 times the tightest window it can find, and says so.
Before the auction
- Agree on the MMR source and a cut-off date, for example each player's ranked MMR on the day registration closes.
- Enter captains (name, team name, MMR) and players (name, MMR, preferred roles), by hand or by CSV.
- Open Budgets, choose a balance level, and confirm Roster reports that balanced teams are possible.
- Share each captain's credits, MMR budget and floor before bidding begins.
- Export a backup, then start the auction. Lists and budgets lock until the auction is reset.
During the auction
- Draw the first nominator on screen. Roster picks a captain at random with the browser's cryptographic random generator and records the result in the log.
- After each sale, the turn to nominate passes to the next captain in the list. Captains with full rosters are skipped.
- The nominator names one player they are eligible to buy. Nominating places their opening bid at the base price (1 credit).
- Other eligible captains raise by at least 1 credit. Roster shows who can bid, and each team's maximum bid, live. The auctioneer records each bid in the auction block by choosing the team and amount, or with the Bid buttons on the team cards; Roster rejects any bid that breaks these rules.
- When the timer runs out and nobody raises, the auctioneer sells the player to the highest bidder.
- The price comes off the buyer's credits, and the player's MMR counts toward the buyer's MMR budget.
- The auction ends when every captain has 4 players. Players not bought stay unsold and can serve as reserves.
Who can bid
A captain may bid on the current player only when all three conditions hold:
- Open slot. Their roster isn't full.
- MMR-safe. After the purchase, their team and every other team can still finish between the floor and the MMR budget using the players left. This can block a bid even when the player fits under the captain's own budget, because the sale would leave another team with no way to balance.
- Credit-safe. The bid is no more than credits − base price × (open slots − 1). This keeps enough credits to fill every remaining slot at the base price.
Because every sale keeps a balanced finish possible, the auction can't get stuck: every player left can go to at least one team, and every nominator has at least one player they can take.
Roles
Preferred roles are shown for reference only. They never affect nomination, eligibility, bids or budgets. Captains are free to weigh them when deciding what to bid.
Rulings and edge cases
- Only one team can bid. The opening bid stands and the auctioneer sells straight away.
- Two captains bid at once. The auctioneer decides who spoke first. That ruling is final.
- Misclicks. The auctioneer can undo the last sale. The player returns to the pool, the credits are refunded, and the undo is logged.
- A nominator with no eligible player. Guaranteed not to happen in normal play. If Roster can't verify any option in time, the turn passes to the next captain.
- Leftover credits have no value after the auction.
- An absent captain names a proxy before the auction starts.
- A player withdraws after the auction. Replace them with an unsold player whose MMR keeps the team between the floor and the MMR budget, where one exists.
Data and backups
- Roster saves automatically in this browser. Clearing browser data erases it, so export backups.
- Export backup saves everything, including a live auction, to a file. Restore from backup brings it all back.
- Every bid is recorded in the Log with the time to the second, the lot number, the team and the amount, including opening bids and bids on lots that were later cancelled. Each sale also keeps its full bid history.
- If you try to close the tab with changes that aren't in a backup, the browser asks you to confirm first.
- Captain CSV columns:
name, team, mmr, roles. Player CSV columns:name, mmr, roles. Write roles as position numbers separated by semicolons, such as1;2, or as names, such ascarry;mid. - CSV import modes: add or update merges by name, replace list swaps the whole list, and remove listed deletes every name in the file.
